There’s something powerful about waking up with purpose. But what if I told you that walking in your calling doesn’t start with hustle, hustle, hustle, it starts with following Jesus?
Let’s get practical, real, and honest.
No One Is Left Out
Let’s start with this truth: No one is left out in the Kingdom of God.
We all have a seat at the table.
You’re not just wearing the merch of the team you’re in the game. If you’ve ever felt counted out, left behind, wiped out, or overlooked think again.
God has chosen you to impact your world for Him.
In Matthew 4:18–22, we find one of the most life-altering moments in Scripture:
Jesus is simply walking along the Sea of Galilee. He sees two brothers fishing just doing their job, getting through the day.
“Follow Me,” He says, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
And without hesitation they go. They leave their nets, their boats, even their families and follow Him. No guarantees. No plan. Just a call.
If I were their dad, Zebedee, I’d be like:“Wait, what?! The workday’s not even done. Who’s going to clean the fish? What do I tell your mother?”
But here’s the point: They walked away from everything familiar because the call of Jesus changes everything.
Do You Remember Your Moment?
That moment when your world was interrupted by grace? When you realized this life wasn’t just about you, but about Him?
That was the moment your calling began.
Jesus doesn’t just save you He invites you into His story.
The First Call: Follow Me
Jesus said it over and over again in Scripture:
“Follow Me.”
He doesn’t say:
“Fix your life, clean up, study theology, serve in five church ministries, and then maybe I’ll use you.”
No, He simply says: “Come with Me.”
And sometimes, we make this simple invitation way too complicated.
We get buried in devotionals, journals, checklists, plans, and performance. We start serving out of pressure instead of joy. We replace “get to” with “have to.”
But walking with Jesus isn’t about performance it’s about presence.
It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it.
He Does the Making, We Do the Following
The disciples didn’t have it all figured out. They weren’t trained. They didn’t take a class on miracles.
All they knew was:
Walk where Jesus walks.
That’s the first step toward walking in your calling. You don’t have to worry about how you’ll become what He’s calling you to.
He does the making. You just do the following.
Your Identity Comes from the First Call
So many of us struggle with who we are and what we’re supposed to do. But the confidence to walk in your calling comes from knowing Whose you are.
Your Father speaks identity over you every single day.
It’s like when my son Elliott and his dad have their morning moment:
“You are my brave boy. Wherever you go, whatever you do, Daddy is always here for…”And Elliott shouts: “Me!”
In that moment, Elliott receives identity, safety, direction, love, and purpose. That’s what it’s like when we sit with our Heavenly Father.
The Second Call: Use What’s in Your Hands
Jesus didn’t call the disciples and say, “You’ll all be street preachers and evangelists.”He said:
“I will make you fishers of men.”
Why? Because they were fishermen.
He was speaking their language. Using their daily life their job, their skill, their identity as a picture of how He’d use them in the Kingdom.
If He had been at a bakery, maybe He would have said, “Follow Me, and I’ll make you bakers of hope.” At a construction site? “Builders of the Kingdom.”
He meets us right where we are.
What’s in Your Hands?
It’s time to get honest. What’s already in your hands?
Do you love baking, working out, hiking, or organizing?
Do you make friends easily or love quiet 1-on-1s?
Are you a golden retriever or a deep soul-connector?
Can you paint, build, lead, encourage, fix, or teach?
Your call doesn’t have to look like mine or anyone else’s.
Psalm 139: “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Ephesians 2:10: “You are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand for you to walk in.”
Your Shoes Are Yours Alone
You were created to walk in the good works God prepared for YOU. Not me. Not your friend. Not the speaker on Instagram.
Your walking shoes won’t fit me and mine won’t fit you.
Follow First, Then Fish
But here’s the key: Don’t flip the order.
Follow first. Then use what’s in your hands to bring Kingdom influence.
If you start with doing before being, you’ll burn out. If you start with Jesus, everything else flows from Him.
Let’s Make It Practical
Take time this week to ask these questions:
What does following Jesus look like in my life right now?
What are my gifts and passions?
What are the practical skills I’ve learned or developed?
Holy Spirit, how do You want to use these to bring Kingdom influence this week?
Write it down. Pray into it. Talk to someone about it.
Because here’s the truth:
As you walk with Him, He walks you into your calling.
You’re Already in the Game.
You don’t need to wait for the perfect moment. You don’t need to earn your place. You already belong.
Just follow Jesus and trust Him to do the making.
